Description
The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme is part of the peri-operative
care protocol used in many hospitals and is designed to enable the patient to return
to their normal activities in a shorter time period. Although the specific protocols
may vary between hospitals, the underpinning principles of the ERAS programme remain
the improvement of patient outcomes and ensuring speedier recovery. This DVD should
increase your understanding of the Enhanced Recovery Programme and how you can play
an active part in your recovery.
The DVD contains a 30 minute programme showing the key points of ERAS, including
pre- operative counselling, your care before, during and after surgery and your
follow-up.
The DVD is fully interactive and contains “Red Button” options which
take you to extended versions of that particular topic providing a comprehensive
level of information. Patient experiences are also included describing their own
treatment and care during their hospital stay, together with a glossary of some
medical terms.

Comments
“This DVD has been designed to help patients who are due to undergo major colorectal
operations and will hopefully make it clear that in addition to the specific techniques
used by various staff, the patient’s understanding and co-operation is a vital part
of the ERAS programme”
Professor P. N. Haray
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
“As shown in this film, we mobilise patients soon after surgery and this reduces
complications.”
Mr A. G. Masoud
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
“We give patients special carbohydrate drinks for a few days before their operation
and encourage them to drink clear fluids up to a couple of hours before they go
down to surgery. These techniques are aimed at improving their nutrition and avoiding
dehydration which results in a quicker recovery and reduced wound infections”
Sue Howells
ERAS Nurse Specialist
“I cannot believe how quickly I recovered after surgery. Just four hours after the
operation I was sitting out of bed and having something to drink.”
Mrs K. Rees
